A friend was looking for a Renault Alpine. This popped up locally. Definitely worth taking a look.

Kinja'd!!!

Full, sad disclosure: He didn’t end up buying it, the owner sold it before he could.

This thing was BEAT though. It had been sitting for around ten years, a definite project car, but dear god, what a project.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The real bad part was that it was misfiring like hell. Still didn’t stop us from taking it out for a little drive.

The interior was fantastic, with that godawful carpet and that oh-so-Japanese steering wheel and gauge selection. Still epicly 80s.

Kinja'd!!!

Rear seats were surprisingly usable.

The seller had some other interesting cars in his stable as well.

So how did it drive? Well even with it misfiring, it was easy to tell how fantastic it could be. It got going fairly quick and the turbo lagged in the perfect way only an 80s car can pull off. Handling was tight, everything was placed well ergonomically, and it sounded awesome. The only way I can describe it is how a DeLorean SHOULD drive.

An Alpine, and a Suzuki Alto. But what’s that go kart thing next to the Alto.

Super jealous, I want one of these so bad and one pops up in Seattle. How much was the guy asking?

So do the pistons still have all their aluminum?

Yeah I don’t feel so bad now. These aren’t worth a whole pile even in nice shape.

Good examples go for $20,000 to $30,000

I would just import one myself if I were interested. I could get a GTA or one of these in better condition.

Have you driven a delorean? They drive well they are just down on power.

Wow those have really gone up - mid-teens used to be a strong price. But it’s going to need a pile of work to be much more than a driver quality example. I’m just trying to make myself feel better here about missing that one on CL and you’re not helping...

Yes, but could you get one in better condition for $9500 or less landed?

I personally would find the best condition of one of these as possible because it would have to rely heavily on my own mechanical skills lol.

I have a Skyline here in the US and owning one of those, despite the mechanicals behind it being common here, has been annoying when it comes to fixing it or modding it. This car would be a nightmare. So I wouldn’t buy one at that price.

I would buy the late-model one, i’ve seen them on like petrolheads for like $12K usd in good condition, and bring in one of those. IDK what this generation goes for in similar condition.

The case might be different if I lived in LA or Chicago but in Las Vegas where you have maybe 1 good mechanic or tuner I wouldn’t exactly jump on this.

I would have one of these cars. They are kind of on my shortlist of R33 “if GTRs become too expensive”.

So I guess the question shouldn’t can I get one for less, the question should be SHOULD I get one at that price and condition. I think for a car like this, for me personally, I would answer no. It had better not be misfiring or having any issues what so ever for me to consider it.
